This illustration depicts a key surgical moment from an open popliteal bypass surgery. This procedure used a harvested great saphenous vein graft to bypass an aneurysm in the popliteal artery. Didactic color was used to clearly identify the graft and artery across figures. Figure A depicts the below-knee arteriotomy. In Figure B, the graft is packed to the arteriotomy and suturing begins. Figure C depicts the suturing near-completion and in the context of the below-knee incision. The illustration was created for journal format.
Surgical Sketches
I created sketches of the entire procedure based on my experience observing the surgery in the operating room.
